Herbal Medicine
Chinese Herbal Medicine involves the use of plants, animal products and minerals in different forms to support the body via a range of methods and applications.
Herbs are typically taken internally, but in some cases, such as skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne, herbs can be used topically.
Herbal Medicine can come in a number of different forms: raw, granules and pills/capsules.
-
Raw Herbs
Raw herbs are herbs in their natural (but dried) form. They need to be boiled to make a tea (decoction) 2-3 times per week (depending on your condition/dosage).
This is the most potent way to take herbs so can be helpful in acute conditions (e.g. colds and flus) or conditions that are more serious.
The beauty of raw herbal formulas is that we can tailor them exactly to your needs. Chinese Medicine has lots of formulas for all kinds of presentations which can be used as a base, but we can make additions or omissions depending on your exact symptoms and underlying imbalances.
-
Granules
Granules are powdered extracts of herbs, meaning they are still potent, but slightly less than raw herbs.
Granules can still be tailored to your needs because they are extracted both as single herbs and formulas.
Granules are taken with hot water, so no boiling/cooking of your herbs is required and they are easier to take with you on the go!
-
Pills/Capsules
Pills and capsules are the easiest form of herbs to take, because they are ready to go in pill or capsule form. These are typically the best option if you’re travelling/need to take your herbs with you.
There are lots of formulas available, so we can find a close fit for whatever it is you need support with, however we are unable to tailor the formula as with granules or raw herbs.
Herbal Medicine FAQs
Do you always prescribe herbs?
I prescribe herbs as needed, depending on your presentation, your health goals and complete health history.
Are herbs included in the consultation cost?
No. The consultation cost includes acupuncture and diet and lifestyle advice, but herbs are an additional cost. Herbs will generally cost between $40-$70 per week (depending on the form, formula and dosage).
How frequently do I need to take my herbs?
This all comes down to your specific needs, but generally herbs are taken twice daily.
I’m super busy and don’t have time to cook my raw herbs - do I have to take raw herbs?
The most important thing to remember about herbal medicine is that herbs only work if you take them. If your lifestyle and schedule are super busy, we can definitely create a formula with granules to make sure you’re still getting the benefit without the added stress!
Help! My herbs taste bad! What can I do?
Let’s be honest, Chinese herbs can sometimes taste a bit bitter or strong. If you’re struggling with the taste, there are a few things you can do:
Add a small amount of honey to your herbs (assuming this is appropriate for you).
Pinch your nose and drink your herbs quickly.
Where do you get your herbs from?
Currently I outsource herbal dispensing so herbs are ordered and delivered straight to your door. Keep in mind this can take a few days (especially if your appointment is on a Saturday). If you need the herbs very quickly, an addition $10 is charged for delivery.
